Welcome to SAVEARTH in Newcastle- To save the earth by yourself.
Hello, everybody, welcome to my blog “SAVEARTH” save the earth by yourself.
This is an environmental blog in Newcastle. Here, you’ll see environmental degradation around the world, what can be done to extend the life of the planet and what environmentalists are doing to reduce pollution.
Biologists once warned: “there will be 5,000 species of animals dying out in the world. In the first half of this century, one mammal will die out every five years. In the second half of this century, it has accelerated to one extinction every two years.” Yet the tragedy continues beneath man’s feet: a turtle stuffed with plastic in his stomach, a polar bear perched on an ice floe with no view of the ice sheet, a variety of wild animals on their way to man’s table…
In addition to these seemingly distant things, there are also some nearby examples: the faucet that you forgot to turn off when applying hand sanitizer, the lights that you didn’t turn off when going out, the plastic bags that you need to buy every time you go shopping, the cars that you choose to drive no matter how far away you are…
In 2020, frequent natural disasters around the world force us to pay more attention to the protection of the natural environment. Environmental protection is the action of individuals, organizations and governments to protect the natural environment for the benefit of nature and human beings. So are vegetarians protecting the environment? What are the dangers of eating wild animals? Has the promotion of Shared bikes, Shared charging Banks and so on really worked? What other small things can we do to reduce natural consumption? I’ll give you the answer here.
American actress Natalie Portman is best known for her roles in Leon the killer, Star Wars and Black Swan, but she is also known as a vegan in the United States. She called for veganism at the WE Day forum in Los Angeles, claiming that eggs and milk are “exploitation of female sex animals“.

Some people think that vegan, like Natalie, is noble, greener, more earth-friendly.
Yet this argument does not hold water. As far as the environment is concerned, veganism is not only not green, it’s worse than some meat-eating omnivores!
The journal Elem Sci Anth has published a paper looking at the impact of different diets on land carrying capacity.
The results showed that in the United States, the overall carrying capacity of the land was the highest if the country adhered to a vegetarian diet with dairy products or two kinds of omnivores with meat. In contrast, a vegan diet requires relatively more agricultural land. To be able to “eat”, they need to convert more pastures and forests into agricultural land, which increases carbon emissions and is very environmentally unfriendly.
Promoting a strict or all-vegetarian diet not only poses a huge risk to women’s health, but also threatens the health and even death of infants and young children.

Indeed, plant-based food can provide us with rich dietary fiber, a variety of vitamins, minerals, and so on, these animal food is not available.
However, it has to be mentioned that vegetarianism has many, many dangers. Such as increased incidence of cardiovascular disease, lack of vitamin B, vitamin D, iron, zinc and other important nutrients needed by the body.
These nutrients cannot be obtained from plant-based foods. Lack of these nutrients can lead to anemia, low immunity, memory loss and other adverse consequences.
An all-vegetarian diet can also lead to a lack of high-quality protein, which can be found in plant-based foods but is of relatively poor quality.
In Newcastle, residents were interviewed about their views on whether vegetarianism is really green.

The Tropical Rainforest notes that in order to meet The meat needs of developed countries, much of The Rainforest in Latin America has been developed for grazing. ”In terms of forest area, each hamburger sold costs more than 6.25 square meters of forest,“ it says.
The UN environment programme has urged people to abandon meat and dairy products: ”To really reduce the impact (of population growth), substantial changes must be made to diets around the world, away from all animal-related products.“
Another problem for the environment is world hunger and social injustice, which is another motivation for vegetarianism. Vast amounts of land and resources are used to produce the meat of the developed world. According to Diet for a New America, a single plot of land can support 20 times as many vegan people as the American Diet.
Each doctrine has its own stand, but the result is a seemingly interlocking effect. The debate should continue. But as AEON puts it in an article on vegetarianism, ”we want food to be delicious, diverse, cheap, convenient, sustainable, animal-friendly, local, and chemical-free. But these values are often in conflict.“
In other words, there is no perfect food.
People cannot generalize about vegetarians, because they each have their own different opinions and ideas and different values.
For example, people should eat more vegetarian food because of their physical functions. Personal belief, cultural background and educational environment; World outlook and values; Eating more vegetarian food is good for health.
In a word, people’s living habits and beliefs in the world are all kinds of people have the right to choose their favorite way of life.
The world is big, we have to learn to accommodate all kinds of different things,
Seb Alex, 29, has been invited to speak at various universities. He is an animal rights advocator who has been a vegan since eight years ago, is giving lectures at European universities on ‘’Animal exploitation & Sustainability’’, which explores the philosophical approach of specialism and the protection of animals and the environment.

He was born and raised in Lebanon. In 2011, he moved to Europe to pursue sustainable architecture. After a year working for the unhcr refugee programme, he took the opportunity to enter the corporate world and work as an international programme coordinator for a construction company in Barcelona.

One year later, he decided to leave his corporate life and devote all his time to something that truly touched his heart: animal rights advocacy.
During 2018, he spoke to more than 1,200 people across Europe and in Australia about vegan advocacy, why it’s vegan, why it’s activist, and learning from previous struggles.
In 2019, he was invited to speak about Animal Exploitation & Sustainability in more than 30 universities and schools, reaching more than 2200 students between the ages of 13 and 30.

”There are so many animals suffering in the dairy- and egg industry, but their suffering is not shown to us. A cow needs to be pregnant before she can produce milk. Farmers keep their cows pregnant by injecting the semen of a bull into the cow. When the calf is born, it won’t be able to drink milk from his mother because the milk is taken away for human consumption.”
“This milk belongs to calves, not humans.”
Seb Alex
“The calf and the mother are separated from each other from birth. If the calf is a female, she will end up in the dairy industry just like her mom. If it’s a male, he will end up being slaughtered. This is why vegetarians still contribute to animal suffering. The animals live in pure misery, just like the ones in the meat industry.“ Seb Alex said in his talk.
Seb Alex has devoted his life to advocating for animal rights and is now working on creating social media content that will make animal rights more accessible to more people.
So why do people go vegetarian?

About 60 percent of vegans and 40 percent of vegetarians (who eat eggs, fish, shrimp and dairy) said they had adopted such a lifestyle in the past five years, with 55 percent citing concern for animals, 45 percent for health reasons and 38 percent for protecting the environment.
Finally, Seb Alex called out: ”If you’re not a vegetarian yet: make your behavior consistent with your morals. If you don’t want animals to suffer, choose vegetarianism.” Listen to your heart and learn about animal changes by watching documentaries or looking up statistics. In an age when there is absolutely no need to eat animals, all the terrible things we do to them are unjustifiable. Livestock is destroying animal lives, and it’s destroying our environment.“
Hundreds of clothes were swapped at today’s event.
More and more clutter in the home, but it is difficult to throw away, because “loathe to give up” “good pity”. Keep buying new things, and you can’t stop because “just in case” or “you’ll need it someday”. I want to tidy my house, but I refuse to do it because it is “troublesome” and “time-consuming”. This is the daily voice of many families.
A clothes swap event took place on Summerhill Trust, Newcastle on February 9. People can bring the clothes they want to exchange from homes and swap them with others so that all the clothes can be reused and recycled. Thus reducing the consumption of oil and saving farmland.
“My sister loves to wear all kinds of clothes, so we have a lot of clothes to get rid of at home. But we thought it might be a good idea to swap these clothes with like-minded people before donating them to charity, so that both parties can own a new piece of clothing.” Victoria Enright, one of the organizers said. She is willing to organize such an event, because they may also get some favorite clothes before donating them.

As the organizers put it in their announcement: “This event is donation based. Money raised will be used to cover the cost of the room and the remaining will be donated to planting some beautiful trees, giving back to nature who gives so freely. All excess clothes will be donated to charities.”
Halcyon Hayward, a participator who wants to find some jumpers and trousers said: “It’s really nice way to get some new things without actually buying new stuff.”
Catherine Aldridge, lives near the Summerhill Trust: “I had a big clear out at home, and came with four bags. It’s really nice to be able to clear out that clear out space. The whole idea of it and the simplicity of it, and and it’s on my doorstep. Also, it’s a bit nicer than going to a charity shop to go and give the bags away.”
“I brought 27 clothes and I left with 9, which is nice.” Emma Lynch, a participator in this event said, “I thought it might be nice to swap clothes rather than to go buy new clothes, because I do get secondhand clothing fetish.”
” I always felt it was wrong to kill animals when it was unnecessary.”

During the two hours Northern Animal Welfare Co-operative (NAWC) spent promoting vegetarianism, only four people were interested in vegetarianism and were willing to learn more about it.
On February 22, the NAWC launched a “Why vegan” campaign at Grey’s monument in Newcastle, with organizer Jay Lord leading four members and an elaborate brochure devoted to the effort to get people to eat less meat.
“I don’t understand why we love these animals and keep them as pets, but we still have chicken and beef and bloody animals on the table at home.”
Jay Lord
He also said: “Many countries have adopted the western diet, so the incidence of diabetes and heart disease has decreased. But if you’ve adopted all the habits (vegetarianism), the country was probably far more healthier before you took started eating beef burgers and McDonald’s and all this sort of thing, so I think for your health for the animals and for the planet, most important is not using any animals and animal products.”

According to a new report about food shopping, now have one every eight britons are vegetarian or vegan, and 21% of people claim to have flexibility, occasionally eat meat, add vegetable based diet, this means that a third of British consumers intentionally reduce the amount of meat they eat, or completely remove meat from the diet.
Yet observation suggests that this is not the case at Newcastle. Interest in vegetarianism is not what the report suggests. Most people who choose a vegetarian lifestyle are middle-aged or elderly, and few young people are interested in it. Even Jay says that NWAC has been subjected to some anti-vegetarian abuse while promoting vegetarianism.

Jay has been vegan for 35 years, and it wasn’t until three or four years ago that he really began to understand the influence of vegetarianism, not only in protecting animals, but also in protecting the environment. Last month, he quit his job and began to devote himself to NAWC promotion. He hopes to make more people realize that vegan is not only a way of life, but also a way of giving back to the earth.
Jay Lord, a vegan for 35 years, from Northern Animal Welfare Co-operative (NAWC), tell us how to do our part to protect the environment…
As for the deterioration of the natural ecological environment, everyone is aware of it. Some people ask: what can I do to protect the environment?
Jay Lord, a vegan for 35 years, from Northern Animal Welfare Co-operative (NAWC), has been vegan since he was 19 and is now campaigning for animal rights. “I don’t understand why we love these animals and keep them as pets, but we still have chicken and beef and bloody animals on the table at home.” Jay said. Vegan is not a regime without eggs or milk; Vegan is a value that tries not to harm or exploit animals as much as possible.
Apart from eating, they do not wear animal furs or leathers such as mink coats or ox boots. They did not use silk or silk quilt made of silk produced by silkworms; And they don’t go to India to experience riding elephants or camels; They don’t go to the circus, or the lion jumping through the fire ring, or the dolphin show at the Marine aquarium. Of course, they don’t want to visit zoos that hold animals for life but claim to educate them for life.
Indeed, they refused to experiment on animals in the name of any science. They do not want to receive vaccines that have been taken out after the virus has been hit on cows, nor do they want drugs that have been developed to kill thousands of mice and rabbits, nor do they want cosmetics and detergents that have been tested on rabbits’ eyes before being given to ordinary people.
Vegetarianism is a healthy, environmentally friendly, effective way to protect animal rights and animal welfare and achieve harmony between man and nature. Vegetarianism can overcome the harm of meat to the ecological environment, prevent the expansion of soil desertification, reduce the consumption of resources, energy and environmental pollution, protect biodiversity, and curb the process of global warming.
In Jay’s opinion, the vegetarian lifestyle is an important way to protect the ecological environment, which is the most important thing people can do, far more important than reducing transportation and taking fewer flights. From an environmental perspective, however, the livestock industry emits more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than all the world’s modes of transportation combined. “We can’t sustain population growth on an animal-based diet. We have to change that. It’s also the morally right thing to do. ” said by Jay.
According to The vegan society, if the world went vegan, it could save 8 million lives by 2050, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by two-thirds, save healthcare related costs and avoid $1.5 trillion in climate damage.
